Animal Sculpture
Most of these sculptures are life-size or larger; a notable exception is "Sperm Whale and Squid"--haven't figured out how to work that big yet! My favorite medium is midfire paperclay, but the work exhibited here includes low-fire stoneware, raku, high-fire paperclay and concrete sculpture.
I feel a strong connection with animals, and after working on a project that doesn't involve them I follow up with an animal form.
Chipmunk Red stoneware. 5" x 4" x 4"
Bobcat 7.5"h x 7"w x 4.5"d The bobcat is found throughout North America in small populations, but its numbers are declining. They are elusive and nocturnal, and bobcat attacks are non-existent.
Star-nosed Mole. Brown stoneware and epoxy resin. 6"h x 5"w x 4"d This mole has exceptional abilities due to the unusual sensory organ on its nose. At first glance ugly, its uniqueness has grown on me enough to want to sculpt it. The nose has 22 appendages that feel pressure, vibrations and can discern textures. Having poor eyesight, this star guides them through underground tunnels, and helps them sense food. The oversized hands make them master diggers.
